What will it be like after 2012?

Centuries ago, the Mayans left us their calendar, with a clear end date and all that it implies. Since then, astrologists have discovered it, numerologists have found patterns that depict it, geologists say the earth is overdue for it, and even government scientists cannot deny the cataclysm of epic proportions that awaits the earth in 2012. A prophecy that began with the Mayans has now been well-chronicled, discussed, taken apart and examined. By 2012, we’d know—we were warned.

Columbia Pictures presents the Roland Emmerich film 2012 starring John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Feet, Oliver Flail, Thandie Newton, with Danny Glover and Woody Harrelson.

The idea for 2012 first occurred to writer/producer/ Harald Kloser, Roland Emmerich’s writing partner. “Every civilization on Earth has a flood myth,” says Kloser. ‘Things are going wrong, society isn’t working anymore, and the planet starts over, Some people get a second chance to start a new culture, a new society, a new civilization.”

The idea crystallized as Kloser and Emmerich on which to hang their contemporary flood stow. The Mayan calendar is set to reach the end of its 13” cycle on Dec. 21, 2012 and nothing follows that date. That, of course, leads to the question—if the calendar doesn’t continue, what will follow?
The key for the director, who is well knowed for box-office hits such as Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, would be to find a way to set 2012 apart from those disaster epics. “The more I talked with Harald about the story, the more I realized this is really something people today can relate to. There are a lot of philosophical and political elements, which I think add to the disaster element.”

Central to that was creating characters that would experience those philosophical and political upheavals, in effect creating the disaster on a human scale. At the very highest reaches of the worlds govern1nents, there is a plan. ‘They will not be able to save the entire human race, but they will be able to save some, and those few will have the chance to begin society anew.

The screenplay that Kloser and Emmerich wrote is in many ways the largest scale that Emmerich has yet attempted. To bring it to the screen, he combines special and visual effects which, the director says, allowed him the freedom to choose how best to bring a scene to life.

2012 ended up being an enormous production, even by Emmerich’s scale. According to actor John Cusack, ‘The scope of it is bigger than anything I’ve seen. Every page of the script was a scene where you wondered Just what Roland had in mind, because it seemed so ambitious, so huge. It’s pretty wild!”

MotoGP

Christmas came early for me this year as my wish was granted in a grand fashion. Santa Claus. instead of donning the usual red suit, came to my house clad in leather overalls, racing boots and a full-face helmet. Santa also ditched Rudolph and the rest of the reindeers in exchange for an 800cc sports bike. I rode with the jolly old man from North Pole to Malaysia for the 16th leg of the MotoGP Championship. Pardon me for injecting a bit of dry humor into this memoir but this is how I feel about my weekend trip to the world-famous Sepang International Circuit to watch my idol, Valentino Rossi, do battle with pretenders to his MotoGP throne.

The Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board and Malaysia Airlines, through their Manila contact Red Rock Travel, played gracious hosts to the Filipino delegation. “Watching the MotoGP race is the icing on the cake, because this trip will open vow eyes to the top tourist destinations of Malaysia,” said Beatrice Totanes of MTPB who played Mother Hen to three misbehaving media practitioners. which included Eggay Quesada of Stoplight TV and popular disc jockey Angel Rivero.

As guests of the MTPB, race organizers arranged a special package for us to watch the races at Sepang. During the qualifying session of the Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix. we were accorded pit access to experience up close and personal how a MotoGP team conduct business on race day.

Quesada and Rivero opted to see a 250cc team in action, while 1, a hard-core Valentino Rossi fan, chose the MotoGP experience of course. Together with an Australian and two other Malaysian nationals. I was ushered inside the pit of Pramac Racing. got to shake hands and chat a bit with Finnish rider Mika Kallio, one of the rising stars of the sport. What made my day was my up close and personal brush with Rossi who was walking out of the Framac race pit. The ‘Doctor7 as he is known in the realm of motor sports, flashed the victory sign when I called out his name.

It rained hard on race day but it was good enough as it cooled down the 33°C degree heat at Sepang. Rossi was in the pole position when the race started, but went wide during the first corkscrew. This enabled his rival Casey Stoner of Team Ducati to overtake him. The Honda Repsol tandem of Danni Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso whizzed by before Rossi could regain his footing. By the end of the first lap out of 21 laps, Rossi was relegated to ninth overall. The whole of Sepang was quiet for a while, as they waited for Rossi to make his move.

Festivals Galore

Some people go on vacations with a specific itinerary to simply attend festivals. These once-in-a-lifetime experiences are culturally educational, awe-inspiring and, welt, ideal venues to hook up, get pissed drunk and unleash wet-and-wild sides you never thought you had. Sounds tempting enough? Try it yourself. I’ve got some suggestions…

I. Starting out as a festival before the Lent the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is considered one of the greatest shows on Earth. The first festivals of Rio date back to 1723. Block parades have become an expressive feature of Rio’s Carnival. Today they number more than 100 and the groups increase each year. And inhibitions proportionally decrease.

2. And if you’re into leaving inhibitions at the airport head on to New Orleans for one of the most original, weird, accessible and mind-blowing carnivals. The Louisianan Mardi Gras is the culmination of a whirl of parades, parties bohemian street revels and secret masked balls, all tied up with the city’s Byzantine social, racial and political structures. Everywhere, the city’s famed bye music (jazz R&B. funk and wild brass) help lure visitors.

3. If that’s not nudist enough for you. the Burning Man, an annual event held k’ the Black Rock Desert, in Northern Nevada, could be. Not really a nude gathering, some people just take the liberty to liberate themselves from clothes due to the harsh Nevadan climate. The festival takes its name from the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy on Saturday evening. ft is described by many participant as an experiment in community radical self-expression and radical self-reliance. In 2008, 49,599 people participated in the event.

4. Want something more literally intoxicating? Oktoberfest is a 6-day festival held each year in Munich, Germany running from late September to early October, ft is one of the most famous events in Germany and the world’s largest fair, with some six million people attending every year and is an important part of Bavarian culture.

5. For electronic music lovers, Love Parade is the place that over a million people go to. Berlin is the host of the event that has grown to become one of the world’s largest free music festivals. Everything about the event is of epic proportions, costing over $ 5 million worth of sound systems, creating more than 260 tons of trash and could be the record-holder of the most people making out in public.

Swimping boo-boos

I know that credit cards are not our best friend. but somehow, we find ourselves relying on them more than we should. A card can be a beneficial financial partner when it’s simply a substitute for cash, meaning you’ll pay in full come due date because it’s hassle- free and virtually interest-free. Other than that, it’s your second worst enemy (the first one is yourself for not having the discipline). Here, in descending order, are the reasons why your card can suddenly turn on you:

I. Debt settlement—This is a really bad transaction, almost as severe as filing for bankruptcy. It may sound like a sweet deal as you can slash a big percentage of your debt as long as you pay the required ‘discounted” amount on time. But your credit score will take a major hit, which means applying for loans in the future won’t be that easy. if that does&t immediately put you in the black list.

2. Skipping a payment—Even Wit’s only one single payment a series of domino effect events will reflect ‘in your bill. Some automatic processing systems may label that as delinquency and you’ll see an immediate rise in your interest fees over and above the other penalties that the missed payment will incur. It can also interrupt the zero-percent deals you made on your card and you’ll be discontentedly confronted by a myriad of complicated computations and a shocking balance.

3. Cash advances—-Everything is jacked up the minute you withdraw that “free” money from the ATM. This should be reserved for real life- threatening emergencies. Otherwise, you’re just digging a deeper grave with every withdrawal. Imagine the higher interest rate and lack of grace period.

4. Maxing out on its own, it’s not a severe problem as long as you pay the balance in full every month. But once you go beyond the limit (card companies give you about 5-percent extra to accommodate big purchases), the charges are astounding and that’s a negative indicator of your credit utilization.

5. Having too many cards —A symptom of bad financial habits, having more than three cards is a downward spiral. It’s difficult to keep track of the fees and charges, making it easier to miss a payment If you’ve maxed out all of them the same time, it’s most likely you cannot afford to pay them off.

6. Late payments—Not as tragic as missing it entirely, paying late will still give you a pile of problems—in the form of multiplied interest charges and penalties ft also goes on your permanent record as a delinquency a cause for your chances of limit increases and other perks to be slimmer.

7. Balance transfers—When done once to simply consolidate your debts into a sin2je account it’s forgivable. But if you hop from one card to another (and still, another) to take advantage of the low interest rates it becomes a red flag in your credit history because each transfer is viewed as a different debt not the same one.

8. Minimum payments —If you do the math, you’ll discover that you’re paying way more than you’ve spent as interest is being charged on both the principal amount and the interest itself, Two years later, you’re still paying ft off and only have shaved off a fraction of the interest. That’s not a bargain, is it?

9. Using a card in emergencies—You may think, that’s what cards are for And you’re right. In times that cash isn’t an option, it’s a blessing to have a card ready What matters is how you manage that transaction. It’s not a mistake to stagger payments over the course of a few months as long as you don’t fall into the trap of defending ft or stretching it for more than really necessary

10. Getting a card for rewards—This is the least damaging “mistake” for cardholders. Rewards are good perks when you’re an on-time full-balance payer because the9re really extras—something you didn’t pay for However, their value cancels out with interest when you don’t pay in full.

Home cooking for health and well-being

With most people foregoing home-cooked meals for fast-food lunches and dinners, is it still any wonder why a lot of people are getting sick and fat?

It may be because busy work schedules make fast food more appealing than a home-cooked meat but this kind of eating practice takes a significant toll on a persons overall well-being Studies show that fast-food meals usually contain high sodium, saturated fat and calorie content causing obesity and other health diseases.

As a way to promote the healthy lifestyle, attendees of the recent Doña Elena Cuisinera Club cooking class held at the Podium in Ortigas were taught how to create easy-to-cook dishes which aren’t only healthy and delicious, but which were perfect for busy men and women.

During the event kitchen master chef Golda Laurel-Liamzon showed off her culinary skills as she taught members and guests how easy it actually is to whip up quick, nutrition-rich meals. Within the afternoon, everyone learned how to make sardine sandwiches, three olive spread, and anchovy and caper pasta—all tasty dishes which only took minutes to prepare.

‘Unlike when you use cooking oils rich in saturated fats, these meals which were cooked using olive oil helps reduce cholesterol levels in the blood, possibly preventing the risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease,” notes the professor “And apart from this those who use olive oil will also benefit fitn, its anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.”

Those who want to eat healthy need to only look back to their kitchen, and begin cooking their own meals using nutrient-rich ingredients such as Doña Elena’s Olive Oil. And with easy-to-prepare recipes available, there is no excuse to postpone starting a healthy lifestyle today.
