Discount Camera Lenses and Lense Accessories

Does anyone own an Olympus E-P1 or E-P2 camera? what are your thoughts on them?

I really like that they have kept their original body, and also this would be my first nice digital, so I am new to using it.
I know nikon or canon would be the way to go, but i want to see what people think about this camera as well.

anyway, do you think it would be okay to buy this or should I actually buy a DSLR?

oh! and are you limited to lenses with this camera?

i love macro lenses! and if these wouldnt be compatible that would be disappointing.

btw – i am a photography student, and am doing traditional photography…but really would like to start getting into digital.. at some point i’d like to start moving into commercial photography and documentary photography.

You can use any 4/3 mount lens with this camera. That means all Olympus, Panasonic and Leica lenes. It is a DSLR…ish. It’s a complete redesign of the digital SLR, what makes digital marketable without holding on to the limitations of the old designs.

It’s good and there’s no reason that you have to stick to Canon or Nikon. However it is expensive. This is nothing at you but it pisses me off that people think that. It’s like saying “I only eat Hamburgers and Hotdogs.” There are 700,000 other types of food and 40 million amino acids, you’ll never grow hair again.

If you’ve got the money I would suggest a lower body (D40, E-520, XS) and two two lenses.

The EP-1 is nice but it’s really aimed at the hip market. It’s the Holga for older white people.

The 18-55mm kit lens is crap.
Filters you don’t need, especially the UV filter.
The extra battery is not necessary unless you plan to shoot every day for long periods of time.
The holster case is probably not the best, nor is it necessary.
The card reader would be good, but it is probably not the best.
The only cleaning kit you need really is a micro fiber cloth.

All in all, the “Pro” kit was just created to get people to buy the camera, since they want to get rid of all the extra junk at a higher price than what is worth, or what they could get for it.

My suggestion is buy the camera body, and nothing else. Then, get a better lens, not the 18-55mm kit. Get a 1 GB memory card, and that’s really all you need.

A pressing perspective question — what will the pic look like?

I ask my favourite model Glenda to stand 10 feet in front of a tree.

Using my 20mm lens, I snap a picture of her, head to toe, so she’s in line with the tree.

I then put on my 50mm lens and take another picture of her, keeping her the same size.

Then I bolt on a 400mm lens and snap another pic, with her the same size as in the first two.

I look at the pics and I see that the tree appears to get progressively closer to Glenda until it looks like it’s right behind her.

Now, standing where I stood to take the 400mm pic, I toss on the 20mm and take one more.

I open up the image in Photoshop and crop out tiny Glenda and the tiny tree.

My question is, will that pic look like the first 20mm image or like the 400mm pic?
To clarify: In the 20mm shot taken at the 400mm distance, will the tree look like it’s right behind Glenda, like in the 400mm shot? Or will it look like the original shot I made with the 20, where the tree looks far back? Or somewhere in between?

Okay, the question is a little confusing but let me try and understand. At first glance it seems to me that the excercise is more of a study of optical compression than perspective if you’ve kept the images framed in the same way. That being said, to keep the images framed the same, your shooting position would change with the 50mm lens from where the shot was taken at 20mm and the same with the shot taken at 400mm repsectively. Now after taking the image with the 400mm lens, standing in the same place you changed the lens once more to the 20mm lens. Are you asking will that image look the same (at 20mm) than the first taken at 20mm? If so, I say no because the image would be much wider than it was the first time after filling the frame at 20mm, from a shooting position used to fill the frame at 400mm. the 400mm lens is 20x longer than the 20mm, therefore your shooting position would be 20x the distance from the original shot. That’s my understanding anyway, so unless this is a trick question I stand by that explanation. Now you cropped the final image down, framing Glenda and the tree taken from the 400mm lens postion, right? Now, back to the compression excercise. An image framed at 20mm when compared to one framed at 400mm would have major differences in percieved perspective due to the optical compression experienced at that focal length, making the two objects (the tree and your model) seem closer than they actually are. That is why we like to use longer lengths when shooting portraits than wider because the compression flatters the features of the subject (in the studio, anyway). With a crop in the final position to frame the tree and your model, in the image, would be a lot different from the other shots in that the resolution would be cruddy (unless you’re using some serious image size), but the optical compression would not complement the image, even while cropped. (if that’s what you did)

So anyway, I’m not sure I really answered your question right. You think?

Hmm, that’s what I figured you wanted to know and I’m convinced that with classic telephoto lens compression and its inherent optical properties the two shots would be slightly different. But from that distance, it would be really hard to tell. Even from a 100% crop.

Where is the best place to buy a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi camera?

I am trying to find a good camera for the amateur photographer I have used the Digital Rebel but i have heard good things about the XTi. I have also heard good things about the Canon 30D. what does the yahoo community think? Which should i get and where should i get it from?

the 30D is rugged and well built. It has a bigger body as well, compared to XTi which has a plastic body. Furthermore, 30D is easier to use and operate. If you can afford, get the 30D, if not then get XTi.

The self cleaning sensor of XTi is its selling pitch. In the real photography world, it makes no real difference. Also xti is 10MP while 30D is 8.2 MP. That doesnt make any real difference either.

XTi is made for consumers and 30D is made for semi professionals.

The best place to buy is ebay because you pay way less compared to big box retailers.

But make sure you dont buy used or refurbished. But it brand new from a reputable ebay store. And dont buy it on auction. You can filter the results to show you Buy it Now prices and then filter it by price from lowest to highest. And see which store offers the lowest Buy it Now price. but if you buy it from Big Box then go to Best Buy.
